Which Dance Style Is Right for My Child? Ballet, Street, Acro, Tap & More

Ballet, street, acro, tap, lyrical, musical theatre… if you're new to it all, the choice can feel overwhelming. The good news? There's no wrong answer. Most children try something, love it, and often add a second style later. Here's a friendly guide to what each class is really like — and the sort of child who tends to love it.

Fairytale Ballet® (ages 3–5)

Our story-led Fairytale Ballet® classes are the perfect first step for little ones. Each half-term follows a familiar fairytale, so children pick up balance, rhythm and coordination through characters and music they already adore. Ideal for: imaginative pre-schoolers who love stories and dressing up.

Ballet & Jazz (ages 5+)

Our Ballet & Jazz classes blend the grace and discipline of ballet — following the respected ISTD syllabus — with the energy and fun of jazz, all in one class. Ideal for: children who like structure and a clear sense of progress.

Acro (ages 5+)

Part dance, part gymnastics, Acro builds strength, flexibility and the confidence to tumble, taught safely through the Acrobatic Arts programme. Ideal for: energetic children who are forever doing cartwheels and handstands in the living room.

Street Dance (ages 7+)

High-energy routines set to the music kids actually listen to, Street Dance is all about attitude, musicality and group energy. Ideal for: confident, lively children who love pop and want to dance with their friends.

Tap (ages 5+)

Tap is rhythm you can hear — crisp footwork, sharp timing and a very satisfying noise. Ideal for: musical, busy-footed children who love making sound and counting beats.

Lyrical

Lyrical blends ballet technique with the expression of contemporary, telling a story through movement. Ideal for: thoughtful, expressive dancers — often a little older — who really feel the music.

Musical Theatre

Sing, act and dance all at once: Musical Theatre is for the natural performers. Ideal for: drama-loving children who light up in front of an audience.

Ready for more? Competition Team

For dedicated dancers who want to push further, our Competition Team Training offers extra challenge and performance opportunities. It's by no means essential — but it's there when the spark is really lit.

And for grown-ups

Caught the bug watching from the side? Our adult classes mean parents can dance too.

Still not sure?

You really can't get it wrong. Pick the one that sounds most like your child, book a trial, and see how they take to it — children often tell you everything you need to know within the first ten minutes. If they're very young, our guide to early-years dance will help, and you can always check the timetable to see what runs at your nearest venue.

Want a steer for your particular child? Email hello@stardustdanceacademy.com or call 07933 746995 — tell us their age and what they're like, and we'll suggest a class or two.
